Thank you for visiting our website. While this website is
primarily about solving problems, before a problem can be
solved, it must be defined. As we define the problems we will
address them. Our goals are to:
• provide resources for students experiencing problems
at UCSB;
• help students understand and avoid the dark side of
campus life; and
• substantially mitigate or eliminate the negative impact
of the dark side of UCSB.
Unfortunately, in the twisted world of a good portion of the
UCSB community, underage and excessive drinking, drugs, lying,
cheating, stealing, rape, sexual assault, violence and promiscuity
are not considered problems. But incredibly, the devotees
of this twisted ethos attack other students, parents, and
victims of these deviant behaviors for being inadequate -
when the victims' lives are adversely affected by violence,
drugs, and sexual assaults, the perpetrators and their apologists
often blame the victims for "making bad choices"
or being "weak."
Before you hit the Contact Us button and launch into a
diatribe in defense of UCSB proclaiming that the problems
found at UCSB are also found at other schools and society
in general, we know, we know. The problems extant in and
around UCSB can be found in society in general and to a
lesser or greater degree at all schools. UCSB is a great
school and has many wonderful things to offer its students
- but it also has a dark side. To the extent that this dark
side can be reduced or eliminated, UCSB will be an even
better place.
Most parents and prospective students are not aware of
the problems at UCSB. UCSB is not utopia - it can be a very
dangerous place for young people. The dangers can be emotional
as well as physical. Unfortunately, UCSB simply refuses
to recognize the existence of these problems. Moreover,
even when the University is forced (because of undeniable,
incontrovertible evidence of wrongdoing or uncontrollable
adverse publicity) it is slow to react and often fails to
seek any meaningful solutions.
We want students to know that when they experience problems,
help is available.
Moreover, students need to understand
that their "friends" and the "UCSB system"
may not be the best place to obtain help and support - they
may actually be part of the problem. If you
think that you may be experiencing any type of problem,
the first place to look for help is your family. Your family
is your best resource - they know you, they love you, and
they will be there for you long after your friends, your
social clubs, and UCSB have forgotten your name. No matter
how serious you feel the problems are, there is always a
good solution.
If you would like to speak to a professional about help,
please visit our resource page for contact information.
As we build this website, we seek your input. Whether you
are a student (past, present or future), parent, educator,
or law enforcement official, your comments are welcome.
Please communicate your experiences, thoughts, and suggestions
to us. Let us how we can provide help and support to students
experiencing problems and improve the situation extant in
the UCSB/IV community. You may use the Community Board or
send us your thoughts directly by using our Comments page.
The first objective of this website is to define the problems
associated with attending UCSB. Then, to provide resources
that can help students and their families avoid the negative
consequences that can occur as a result of attending UCSB
or living in the UCSB/IV area. Most importantly, we want
to be a positive force for change.
