UCSB Bites 9
UCSB Bites - October 2006
Political Bites
For those of you who think that former A.S. president Cervin
Morris was deported, here is a little write-up on Cervin from this week's Nexus:
“General reaction has been very good, but also
there are a certain amount of racial slurs,” former Associated Students
president and organizer Cervin Morris said. “No sympathy for the 30 children
getting kicked out of school.”
After the rally, organizers threw a party to raise money for the tenants’
mounting legal fees. The party, held on the 6600 block of Del Playa Drive, had a
$5 cover fee. Jeronimo Saldana, an organizer of the event, said the group raised
over $1,300 at the party.
Morris said the party fundraiser, of which there have been several, targets
I.V.’s culture, as well as its wallet. “They won’t show up to a
protest, but they’ll show up to a party,” Morris said of I.V.’s residents.
“So we said, ‘Fuck it, we’re throwing a party. A fundraiser party.’”
It would appear that comrade Morris agrees with our position:
Its all about the party.
UCSB Non-Judgmental Bite
Can't find any.
UCSB Judgmental Bites
Slumlords try to rent crap and raise rents –
I
am shocked.
Who caused the Cedarwood evictions? More students, more
demand, more middle class money drives rents up. If UCSB and SBCC lowered the number
of new students admitted, there would be fewer people looking for
housing. Therefore, rents would be lower. Here endth the
lesson. If you want to find the culprit for the evictions, just look at
increased admissions –
continued growth from UCSB and SBCC caused the
problem. Or, would this simple answer not be as much fun as blaming the
landlords and whipping up racial divisions? If you want to protest
someone, try Yang. The real estate owner is merely responding to market
conditions in IV –
a one sided (ever increasing demand) market created by UCSB
and SBCC. One more thing: Has anyone even looked into how many of
the UCSB faculty own investments in IV real estate?
Respectfully submitted,
