Alcoholics Anonymous describes their self-supported organization as “a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism.” The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for AA membership.

Since 1919, Catholic Charities has been one of the largest social service providers in the Santa Barbara, Ventura and Los Angeles County areas. Their services include emergency food and shelter, low-cost before-and-after-school childcare, immigration and refugee assistance, psychological services, computer and jobs skills training, and other supportive services. Family Service Agency (FSA) programs are available throughout Santa Barbara County. FSA offers programs that “help people help themselves”. FSA services are designed to prevent family breakdown, intervene where problems are known to exist and help individuals and families to build on existing strengths. They also offer programs addressing the unique concerns of youth, individuals, couples and seniors. Services are offered to everyone on a sliding-fee scale and many are offered for free.

The Hospice of Santa Barbara provides care for people adjusting to living with life-threatening illnesses, people facing death, people anticipating the death of a loved one, or for people healing their grief after the death of a loved one. They focus on the patient and family, together, “regardless of the patient’s diagnosis, treatment choices, or life expectancy”. These services include counseling, support groups, information and referrals.

The Santa Barbara Rape Crisis Center is “dedicated and committed to ending sexual assault in our lifetime.” To fulfill this mission, they provide crisis intervention, counseling, advocacy and support in order to heal and empower sexual assault survivors, their family members and friends. They also provide community education and prevention programs to increase the awareness, empathy and understanding necessary to effect the attitudinal and behavioral changes which are essential to the elimination of sexual assault.
